5 Fun and Easy Activities to Keep Kids Entertained During School Holidays

We know it can be hard trying to entertain your kids at home when they’re on school break.

Don't worry, we've got you covered!

These activities include a range of skills are prep-free and will keep them entertained for hours! The best bit? Your children won't even realise they are learning too!

1. Egg drop

This challenge will put your kids' creativity to the test! They are to design an object to prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from a certain height.

All you need are some eggs and basic craft supplies such as cotton balls, straws and bubble wrap. Or, let your kids get resourceful and scavenge materials from around the house!

Make sure to test these outside for easier clean up (if it doesn’t work first time 😀).

2. Packing list

Going on a holiday or have a camping trip planned? Even day trips, sleepovers and picnics are great opportunities to get your kids involved in the planning stage.

Have them write a list of what to pack. Simply create a table with the following headings: Item / Quantity / Packed

Your child will list each item, how many they need to pack…and then tick it off once it’s packed.

This helps your child become independent, as well as helps making packing a little easier for you!

3. Reading for pleasure!

Make reading a fun holiday activity for your kids, that doesn’t feel like ‘homework’ or a chore, but rather a relaxing and enjoyable activity.

  • Let them choose what they want to read. It doesn’t really matter what they’re reading, as long as they are reading and enjoying it. Comic books are a great way to get your child hooked - they’re always a favourite!

  • Get comfortable! Your child can snuggle up somewhere warm and cosy, such as in bed, on a beanbag or on the sofa.

  • Older siblings can share a story with younger members of the family which is a lovely way to spend some time together. Or with older kids, reading can be done in silence…which is probably hard to come by in your house these days…enjoy!

Fun Fact:

Research has shown that reading with a child can help to develop:

📕 a rich and broad vocabulary
📗 skills for empathy
📘 improved cognitive function
📙 greater creativity
📕 stronger bonds and connections in their relationships
📗 improved mental health

4. Run a cooking competition

Hold a Masterchef style cooking competition to see who can make the healthiest meal for dinner or the most mouth-watering dessert! They’ll learn from reading the recipe, following instructions and even a bit of maths with measuring skills.

If you’re thinking, oh what a mess…yes, you’re probably right! But the fun your kids will have will make it worth it.

5. Board games

Time to pull those classic board games you might have at the back of your cupboard! 🎲

Board games are great for kids for developing social skills such as turn taking, but one of the best things board games can help your child with is developing all of those essential maths skills!
