What Teachers Actually Want for Christmas

Looking for a thoughtful way to show your child's teacher how much you appreciate them?

From end-of-year celebrations to World Teachers' Day, there are plenty of opportunities to thank the teachers who help our children learn and grow.

But what do teachers actually want?

Mugs and pot plants are always popular, but teachers can end up with quite a collection over the years!

The good news is that a thoughtful gift doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Here are a few thoughtful ideas to help you find something your child's teacher will love!

1. A Small Treat Just for Them

A little something delicious is always a lovely way to say thank you, especially when it's a treat you know your child's teacher enjoys!

A few ideas include:

  • a small box of their favourite chocolates

  • a packet of specialty biscuits or Christmas treats

  • a cute gift box of tea or coffee.

Not sure what they like? Your child might already know! Teachers' favourite snacks, colours and hobbies have a funny way of becoming common knowledge in the classroom.

2. The Surprisingly Useful Gift: A Sturdy Tote Bag

Here's one gift idea you might not have considered: a good, sturdy tote bag!

Teachers often have plenty to carry home, especially when they're packing up their classrooms at the end of the school year.

A pretty canvas tote with strong handles can be a lifesaver when it's time to carry home books, classroom decorations and all those lovely end-of-year gifts!

Choose one in their favourite colour, personalise it with their name or find a fun design that suits their personality.

Bonus points if your child gives it to their teacher a few days early. They might just get to use it straight away!

3. A Little Voucher or Group Gift

Sometimes the best present is the opportunity to choose something for yourself.

A small voucher for a favourite café or bookshop can be a lovely way to treat a teacher without adding another item to their collection.

Think a coffee and cake from their favourite café, a new book to enjoy over the holidays or a little something from a local shop they love.

If several families would like to contribute, a group gift can also work beautifully. Pooling contributions means you can make your money go further, perhaps choosing a more generous voucher or gift than families might purchase individually.

If you're organising a group gift, it's worth checking your school's gift policy first.

4. Something Your Child Has Made

Handmade gifts can be especially meaningful because they're personal. And they don't have to be complicated!

Encourage your child to make something small and thoughtful, such as:

  • a colourful bookmark featuring their teacher's favourite animal

  • a personalised keyring or bag tag

  • a handmade Christmas decoration.

The best handmade gifts are often the simplest. A little personal touch, like choosing their teacher's favourite colour or animal, can turn something small and useful into a lovely keepsake.

5. The Gift Teachers Often Treasure Most

A heartfelt thank-you card can mean more to a teacher than you might realise.

Teachers put an enormous amount of care and energy into their students, and hearing that they've made a difference is a wonderful reminder of why they do what they do.

If your child isn't sure what to write, try asking them:

  • What's something your teacher helped you learn this year?

  • What's your favourite memory from their class?

  • What's something you'd like to thank them for?

Let your child answer in their own words. Younger children can draw a picture or dictate a message for you to write.

You might also like to add a note of your own, especially if their teacher has helped your child through a challenging time or encouraged them to try something new.

It's the Thought That Counts

A small treat, a practical present or a few heartfelt words can all be wonderful ways to say thank you.

By involving your child in choosing or creating something special, you're also teaching them the importance of showing gratitude to the people who help them learn and grow.

And that's a lovely gift in itself!
